Referee: The referee supervises the game, calls the penalties, determines if goals are scored and handles face-offs at center ice at the start of each period.

Linesman: Two are used. They call offsides, icing and handle all face-offs not occurring at center ice. They do not call penalties, but can recommend to the referee that a penalty be called.

Boarding
Called for driving opponent into dashers. A major penalty for causing injury.
Charging
Called for taking more than three strides before checking opponent.
 
Cross-checking
Called for hitting opponent with both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice.
Elbowing
Called when using elbow to impede opponent.
 
High Sticking
Called for carrying stick above shoulder against opponent.
Holding
Called for using hands on opponent or his equipment.
 
Hooking
Called for using stick or blade to hook opponent.
Interference
Called for having contact with opponent not in possession of the puck.
 
Misconduct
Called for various forms of misconduct or when a player incurs a second major penalty in a game.
Slashing
Called for swinging stick at the opponent.
 
Tripping
Called for using stick, arm, or leg to cause the opponent to trip or fall.
Wash-out
When used by the referee it means goal disallowed and by the linesman it means no offside or icing.
